Proper Names and Titles

  1. For professional titles, use the person's title, first name, and last name when they are first mentioned. After that, use only the last name.
    1. Dr. Wendy Royer opened up the graduation ceremony with a short story from her childhood. In it, Royer mentioned her own memories from high school.
    2. Principal Greg Puckett attended the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony last night, and offered his own words of advice to the inductees. Puckett stressed personal responsibility and community service.
  2. For students, list first and last names, followed by a comma, and their grade, and then a second comma, for the first reference. After this, only use their last name. Be consistent in how you denote grade: either with numerals or with words.
    1. Sally Sample, sophomore, mentioned her love for reading. Sample praised the efforts of the book club.
  3. In general, do not use courtesy titles such as Mr., Mrs., or Ms. after the person's first mention unless they must be distinguished from other people with the same last name.
    1. Mr. McCaslin is currently a math teacher at Springfield, while Mrs. McCaslin teaches English.
